Wearing Menstrual Cup After Pregnancy
With the addition of a new child to the family the thought of how you're going to handle your period should be one of the last things on your mind.
The Lunette cup can be worn post-pregnancy
It's clean, comfortable and you'll save loads of money when it comes to menstrual products. Which is a good thing - because diapers are expensive!
Not sure you'll fit into your size 1 cup after pregnancy?
Just because you can't fit into your size six jeans anymore doesn't mean you'll have to throw out your size 1 Lunette menstrual cup! Even after kids you may still want to wear a size 1 cup. (I should mention that there are lots of Lunette users who have not had kids who prefer the larger size 2 cup. Some women's bodies do change quite a bit with pregnancy and find that moving up to a size 2 Lunette menstrual cup is more comfortable for them during menses.

You should not use a menstrual cup for postpartum bleeding.
However, after your healthcare provider's "go-ahead" you should be able to use a menstrual cup easily and comfortably. Everybody is different and the time it takes to heal from a vaginal birth varies from person to person. Consult your doctor before the use of your menstrual cup or any other internal feminine hygiene products.
If your Lunette has stayed on the bathroom shelf from the beginning of your pregnancy, before long the time to use it will come again. In the baby time euphoria and hormone turmoil one thing, at least, is certain: the Lunette will continue to function after your childbirth.
Which menstrual cup size to choose after pregnancy?
Even if you don’t fit into your favorite jeans anymore, you don’t need to abandon your Lunette size 1. Women who have given birth can use size 1 cup, especially if the amount of flow has remained light. If your pelvic floor muscles have weakened and the cup seems to slip down a small pelvic floor muscle exercise is in place. Here you'll find good tips for exercising. For many women the amount of flow increases after the childbirth and then we recommend using the size 2 Lunette cup.
Cervix
Many women who have given birth become aware of the position of their cervix in a different way than earlier, especially if they have given several births. If the cervix is situated low Lunette size 1 will fit more likely better because it's shorter. With some women size 2 fits around the cervix comfortably. Read more about the cervix from our previous blog post.
Heavy bleeding
If your periods are significantly heavier due to hormonal action or e.g. an IUD installed after the childbirth you may consider trying Lunette size 2. Read more information about cup sizing on our website.
IUD
The Lunette cup can be used with the IUD but please ask your doctor to cut the IUD removal strings as short as possible. When removing the cup squeeze it gently in order to release the suction. This eliminates the risk that the suction would move the IUD out of place. The length of the removal wires should be observed from time to time. If the wires suddenly seem to be longer the IUD may have changed position. If this happens, please consult your doctor.
Postnatal bleeding
Don't be too hasty to start using your Lunette again after giving birth. We do not recommend Lunette for the postnatal bleeding because of inflammation risk. Wait until your postpartum doctor appointment and ask his/her opinion if your cervix is fully closed. Then you'll be ready to use your Lunette cup again!
